Content farms, such as Demand Media’s eHow and similar low-cost content publication sites, are now deemed an industry “concern”. “Industry” being the traditional publishing idustry, and concern presumably being “competitive threat”.

A trade group called the Internet Content Syndication Council (ICSC) has been circulating a document entitled “Council To Counter Web Content Generators Growing Clout”. They talk about “job threatened journalists” and “diminishing content standards”. Look, see what happens when the proletariat gets their hands on the printing press!

The pundits have also weighed in. So many journalists, eh. Looks like an over-supply if you ask me Some of them could learn a thing or two from SEOs.

For starters, many seem to be working on the false premise that Google returns “quality” results. Since when has Google ever been about “quality” results? Google’s aim is to return links the searcher finds relevant.

The goal of effective information architecture (IA) is to make the products, services and information on your website easy to find. Sound familiar? This is same goal that an SEO professional has. But the skills of an information architect are quite different from the skills of an SEO.

Four fundamental skills that information architects have are:

Categorization

Organization

Prioritization

Labeling

Let’s look at these skills individually, and how each of these relate to the field of search engine optimization.

SEO Advice: Make a web page for each store location

If your company has a bunch of store locations, please don’t hide that information behind a search form or a POST. If you want your store pages to be found, it’s best to have a unique, easily crawlable url for each store. Ideally, you would also create an HTML sitemap that points to the web pages for your stores and each web page should have a unique url. If you have a relatively small number of stores, you could have a single page that links to all your stores. If you have a lot of stores, you could have a web page for each say state that links to all stores in that state.

Here’s a concrete example. I’m a big fan of Pinkberry because I love frozen yogurt: both the delicious treat and the new version of Android. : But Pinkberry’s store locator page only offers a search form. Pinkberry has a url for each store for example, here’s their page for a San Jose location. But because Pinkberry doesn’t provide an HTML sitemap on their store locator page, it’s harder for search engines to discover those pages exist. And in fact for the query [pinkberry san jose], Google does find the specific page, but it doesn’t rank as highly as it might; some other search engines don’t return that web page at all.

SEO Advice: Make a web page for each store location.

Today I spent the morning working on a task that I try to do at least once a month – SEO on individual key posts in my archives.

While it’s important to know and practice the basics principles of SEO in the way you set up your blogs structure and in the writing of your posts – I find it can be very worthwhile periodically going back through key old posts to optimize them even further. I’ve used the following process for a while now and in most cases where I do it I find I’m able to increase my ranking for different posts.

I’m not the world’s best SEO but here’s the process that I use in doing this (I invite you to share yours in comments if you do this type of thing) – I hope you find it useful:

At their Chicago SEO company, content developers spend hours struggling over the perfect words for the homepage of websites they create. Organization and layout are crucial, and they consider every possible connotation of each selected word. To put an exclamation point or not can be a serious point (pun intended) of contention! And all this careful attention pays off– they nail down the message in just a few sentences right there on the first page that the average visitor sees.

Experts say that search engine optimization (SEO) concerns should be integrated in web design.

Rob Garner, strategy director of digital marketing for iCrossing, wrote a column at MediaPost about how web designers are hesitant on integrating SEO expertise in to their web lay outs. Garner says that doing so will provide many long-term benefits for websites.

In integrating SEO and web design, many details must be observed in the design process. Garner pointed out that most web designers tend to overlook details, like traffic source and conversion when it comes to SEO concerns.

Most experts agree with Garner. Integrating SEO with web design has many benefits. However, the partnership needs to be studied properly before it works.

English may be the so-called lingua franca of the World Wide Web, but consider this: three-quarters of the world’s population speaks no English whatsoever. Online, over 460 million internet users communicate in English. Yet there are over 1.5 billion internet users across the globe, which means that over a billion web users claim a language other than English as their native tongue. That’s a lot of people. The Web is a linguistic labyrinth and the need for businesses to talk to customers in their own language can’t be overstated.

There’s a cacophony of cultural complexities that must be considered before localizing a web site’s content for international markets. With this in mind, businesses that want to go global need to think local.

By Chris Boggs, Search Engine Watch, Oct 23, 2009

Many interactive marketing companies and their clients are fully immersed in 2010 planning these days, as my Outlook calendar can demonstrate. Fortunately, SEO is getting more consideration for a bigger piece of the pie (or even better, an additional whole pie to complement increased search and display advertising budgets).

Before delving too far into 2010, however, marketers should also consider what to do from an SEO perspective to push the needle further during the upcoming online holiday season.

Basically James started the company “Alexander Mann Solutions” (AMS), which was in the recruitment industry. However, he had a unique approach to retaining key staff – when a staff member had a good idea, instead of being discouraged, which would in turn encourage them to leave and start their own business, (which happens more often than you think) they are allowed to use the Alexander Mann name to launch a subsidiary of the company, supported by AMS, with a share in the new business. Infact, one of the most successful offshoots of this strategy was the outsourcing arm of Alexander Mann, now with a £140M annual turnover.

This idea struck a chord with me because this is what successful SEO/M agencies should be doing. Growing and developing their key staff. I have often mentioned that

SEM as a whole is an industry in its infancy, there are no defined rules, no degrees, no real industry wide qualifications, nor are there set regulations.

This means its still pretty much the wild wild west when it comes to possibilities. Yet it’s one that is growing day by day, and the opportunities are seemingly endless.

Companies have an unlimited budget for items that give them a positive return. Even in a recession this is true.

Unfortunately for SEO’s Search Engine Optimization Experts companies are considering their work one of these unmeasurable and many of theme are now out of work.

About everyone I know who attended and was not a incisive media employee was talking about how the SEO flag ship conference, SES San Jose, was completely dead… and everyone is blaming the recession. I concur the recession has hit the SEO industry very hard. In a recession people go into survival mode and if they cant easily justify the spend then they cut it.

Lately it seems like SEO companies have had to learn to adapt or die. SEO client work not only sucks but it does not scale and its definitely not stable.

Also there is no magic secret sauce to SEO anymore. Its pretty obvious how to get your site to the top of Google and people are making great products available to these businesses for a fraction of the cost.

With In-House SEOs, moonlighting is essential because it gives them experiences beyond their immediate work and gives them a platform for experimentation. With agency staff, their own projects also offer the opportunity for experimentation. Better that they try and fail on a test site than a live site. Better to get a blog banned than a multi-million pound e-commerce site.

SEO is an art and a craft. It takes skill, knowledge, understanding and learning. Training is sparse once beyond the beginning stages, only available at conferences and through testing. Reading, reading and more reading combined with testing and a skilled, sharp mind is needed for SEO. With this discipline, both the art of marketing and the skill of technical knowledge and expertise combine together.

Chicago – Design & Promote, a leading Chicago web design and SEO firm recommends using WordPress as a content management system for their business customers that want to get their website found online.

A website is the extension of a business or it can also be a part of your individuality, depicting who you or your business is. Today websites need to be much more user friendly, in order to increase traffic and get more customers. One of the simplest things to do is to add a CMS or Content Management System into your website, which will take care of all the contents being added to the site making it easy to edit later. With the help of a CMS, it becomes very easy to launch and maintain a site and keep it updated easily, adding photos and new stories as the need presents itself. Google always likes fresh content and will often add new blog posts to the top of the list for popular search terms.
