Web Design Tips for Search Engine Optimization

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

By Sukrit Dhandhania

With so many websites being added to the Web all the time, bringing visitors to your website becomes increasingly difficult. SEO, or search engine optimization, is a key technique for making your site appear to as many web users as possible. My previous article explained how to use keywords to help your SEO efforts. In this article, I offer some tips for making the design and code of your website search engine friendly.
Plan Your Design with SEO in Mind

A common mistake among inexperienced web designers is to design and create the website first and then think about SEO as an afterthought. As a result, the SEO often suffers from a compromised implementation. A more effective approach might be to consider what your SEO plans are at design time. This way, neither your design nor the search engine optimization will have to be compromised.
Use Header Tags

Using the right HTML tags is one of the most important styling techniques for making your code search engine friendly. Header tags, such as h1, h2, and h3 are HTML tags that make the words between them stand out as bold, big text. These tags are mostly used for page or paragraph titles. Search engines also use these tags to determine which information is more important. So it’s important to use these tags carefully and according to the norms suggested by search engines.

Use these tags in descending order from large (h1) to small (h3). Depending upon how many sections and subsections you have on each page, the way you would implement your header tags would be something like this:

Economy doesn’t hamper Web site designer

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

By Jeff McKinney
The weak economy hasn’t kept Betsy Emery from picking up new clients for her Web design and development firm.

The owner, president and CEO of Tellus, Emery invested $275,000 last year to enhance her company’s online software to boost the number of visitors and consumers making purchases on her clients’ Web sites. In return, Tellus reaped more than $1 million in new contracts in 2009.

“With the negative forces in today’s economy, the return we’re getting shows that people are relying on online growth and cost efficiency for survival and continued profitability,” Emery says.

Her firm mainly designs Web sites for retailers locally and nationally to complement their brick-and-mortar operations. It provides software that precisely categorizes products or services a company has to sell, increasing the likelihood that consumers shopping online will find them.

paidContent.org – Industry Moves: Twitter Hires Google’s Head Designer As Creative Director

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Joseph Tartakoff Monday, March 30, 2009

When Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Design Lead Douglas Bowman quit in somewhat of a huff two weeks ago, he hinted that he had something else lined up. Turns out, according to a report by Spencer Ante, that Bowman is heading to Twitter, where he will serve as the company’s creative director. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone previously held the title.

At Twitter, Bowman will be in charge of finding a balance between the site’s stated desire to keep things simple while also ensuring that the site’s user interface remains relevant?and useful? as the service grows in popularity. (As any avid Twitterer knows, too many tweets can quickly become overwhelming.) Twitter CEO Evan Williams has talked about finding new ways to organize the information gathered from Tweets, including possibly introducing a system to rank Twitterers according to the usefulness of their Tweets. A Twitter spokesman did not return an e-mail seeking comment. But Stone tells Ante, “The Twitter Web page looks pretty simple. But from our perspective the design needs a lot of work.”
