Let’s Encrypt is now issuing free SSL/TLS certificates for IP addresses, making it easier and more affordable to secure sites without a domain name. While IP-based certificates have existed from other providers at $40–$90 per year, Let’s Encrypt offers them at no cost, providing secure connections for those with static IPs or special infrastructure needs.

Although domain names remain the standard for flexibility and SEO, IP address certificates can be useful for hosting providers, DoH servers, and short-lived secure connections. Let’s Encrypt limits these certs to six days for added security, aligning with the industry’s push toward short-lived certificates.
